Scholarships

The Southwest High School Foundation currently awards the following scholarships:

One $1000 scholarship for a student attending a technical college

One $1000 scholarship for a student attending a community college

Three $1500 scholarships for students attending a four year college

Three $2000 James Baxter Athletic Scholarships

One $750 Van Nichols Scholarship

One $500 Art Froehle Scholarship

We are also very involved with the Win Wallin Scholarships. This year there will be 20 awarded district wide. Each will be for $12,000 to attend a 4 year college - $3000 per year. If you would like to become a mentor and coach to a first year college student, please contact Kathy .

James Baxter Athletic Scholarship

  The James Baxter Athletic Scholarship is an annual scholarship program administered through the Southwest Foundation.  It is given to one male, one female, and one minority student athlete at the annual Senior Awards Night in May.

  The James Baxter Scholarship was established in 1994 as a tribute to Jim Baxter, a long-time teacher and coach in the Minneapolis Public Schools.  The scholarship was established initially through a generous endowment of an athlete’s father.  It is maintained through an annual fund-raising effort in the fall.   After many years at West High School, Jim retired in 1992 after nine years as varsity hockey coach at Southwest.  It is an annual scholarship of $2,000 given to four deserving Southwest senior varsity athletes.
