James
Baxter Athletic Scholarship
The James Baxter Athletic
Scholarship is an annual scholarship program administered through the Southwest
Foundation. It is given to one
male, one female, and one minority student athlete at the annual Senior Awards
Night in May.
The James Baxter
Scholarship was established in 1994 as a tribute to Jim Baxter, a long-time
teacher and coach in the Minneapolis Public Schools. The scholarship was established initially through a generous
endowment of an athlete’s father. It
is maintained through an annual fund-raising effort in the fall.
After many years at West High School, Jim retired in 1992
after nine years as varsity hockey coach at Southwest. It is an annual scholarship of $2,000 given to three
deserving Southwest senior varsity athletes.
